Six Colchester tech companies feature in Essex Tech 50 2026

The Essex tech sector continues to grow from strength to strength, from billion pound investment in supercomputers in Thurrock, to local entrepreneurs taking that risk and starting their newest venture on a shoestring.

Today, Essex is home to an estimated 5,320 tech businesses employing over 20,500 people, a testament to its dynamic and growing ecosystem.

This third iteration of the Tech 50 shows the depth of growing and highly competitive businesses who are based in Essex. This year, we’ve also introduced individual awards to recognise truly outstanding contributors, a challenging task given the wealth of talent within our borders.

The Tech 50 has gone from a simple to list to a catalyst of competition within our county and acted as a springboard for those aspiring to be on the next cohort of Grow Essex Global. We hope the following businesses and individuals inspire you to innovate and grow, and to make you certain that Essex really is the home of innovation.

Colchester Creative Agency at Gigabit Speed with Pure Fibre Broadband

Colchester-based creative agency This Is Fever is the latest company to see a successful installation of full fibre gigabit speed broadband: “Having ultrafast broadband enables us to provide the best possible service to our clients here at This Is Fever. Getting our connection put in place was really straightforward. The entire project team made sure the installation went very smoothly. Businesses in Colchester town centre continue to reap the rewards of ultrafast fibre broadband, thanks to an innovative scheme project managed by Colchester Amphora Trading (CATL) – one of the new private companies launched in 2018 by Colchester Borough Council.

The Nationwide Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) is now providing vouchers worth up to £2,500 for a small- or medium-sized business, or £500 for a residential property, to help with the costs of connecting to gigabit broadband.

Creative Colchester website launched to showcase Colchester’s growing creative and digital sector

Businesses in Colchester’s growing creative and digital sector now have their own website thanks to funding from the EU and Colchester Borough Council. The website is being used to promote their work and showcase the wealth of creative talent in the borough. www.creativecolchester.org.uk is intended as a platform for people in the creative, cultural and digital sector in Colchester, to promote jobs, opportunities and events in the area.

University of Essex part of ambitious £4.3m project to drive creative industries across South East

The UK Government has awarded £4.3m to develop the Thames Estuary Production Corridor, a collaborative project aiming to put the South East’s creative industries at the heart of the national industrial strategy. The University of Essex and the University of Kent are working together as part of the ambitious collaboration which also brings together local authorities plus the South East Local Enterprise Partnership. The funding will support tailored local plans that use culture to create jobs, boost tourism and ultimately regenerate communities.
