Section 2 of Local Plan Adopted by Colchester Borough Council

Colchester Borough Council has formally adopted Section 2 of its Local Plan.

The Local Plan, which was found legally sound by an independent Inspector in May, was finally approved on 4 July during a special meeting of the council, following consideration by the Local Plan Committee last month.

The formal adoption of the plan followed a lengthy consultation process, culminating in a formal Examination in Public and further consultation on modifications to the plan last year. The Inspectors considered around 1,192 comments in the latest consultation, as well as those made in earlier consultations, before coming to their conclusions.

Section 2 includes policies and site allocations that can be used to decide planning applications within the borough up to 2033 and beyond. As well as finding sites for new housing, the policies will ensure sufficient land is available for employment and economic growth and that supporting infrastructure is provided.

Council Adopts Section One of its New Local Plan

Colchester Borough Council has formally adopted the first part of its new Local Plan.

At an extraordinary meeting of the Full Council last night (1 February), members approved Section One of the plan, paving the way for a new garden community and for work on Section Two of the plan to continue.

Section One has been drawn up jointly between Colchester Borough Council, Tendring District Council and Braintree District Council, and supported by Essex County Council, taking a cross-border approach to sustainable development and the future of homes, jobs and infrastructure in north Essex.

It includes proposals for a new garden community on the border of Colchester and Tendring, adopting an infrastructure-led approach that includes a Rapid Transit System and a requirement for 920 homes to be built each year during the plan period to 2033.

Colchester Awarded £1m for Public Realm Schemes

Colchester is set to receive £1 million to revamp two gateways to Colchester town centre, following an announcement by the Government.

The money, which has been awarded to We Are Colchester, which is leading on Colchester’s £25m Town Deal bid, will be spent on the first phases of two public realm schemes, at St Nicholas Square and Balkerne Gate, with bids for further funding to follow.

£100K Cricket Funding for Council’s Sports Park at Colchester’s Northern Gateway

The Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park has been awarded £100,000 by the England and Wales Cricket Board, creating a strong partnership with Essex County Cricket Club and Colchester Borough Council.

The £100,000 will contribute towards a new indoor cricket facility in the north of Colchester, which will form part of the sports facilities that will be managed by Leisure World for Colchester Borough Council.

Colchester Showcased in National Report on Council House Building

A major report, which spotlights Colchester Borough Council’s ambitions to build more council houses, was launched at the Local Government Association’s annual conference in July.

The report by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) and the District Councils Network (DCN), titled Districts building for the future: The impact of the removal of the HRA borrowing cap, surveyed 50 Councils nationwide. It concludes that the 2018 lifting of a Government debt cap on local council borrowing to fund housebuilding has already led to two-thirds of councils seizing the opportunity to build more social housing in the near future.
